Have you ever worried that as your children navigate around the Internet they are going to come across something questionable? One of the ways to minimize the chance of this happening is to set up a favorites folder that includes all of their favorite websites. You can go through and check out each one before it is added to make sure that it is a site that you feel is worth them being on. Also, they can talk with you if they think there is a site that needs to be added.
By placing all of the sites in one location, they will be able to navigate to the folder and choose the site that they want to be on. These may be games, educational games or tasks, or even email. It is up to you to include the sites. In order to make this easier for them to understand, you may want to have them sit down with you and take about the different places they like to visit online. At that point, you can look at the sites together and determine whether or not they should make it into the favorites folder.
This set up makes everyone comfortable. You know where you kids are going online and feel safe knowing that they are on pre-approved sites. They feel good because they know that they are on safe sites and shouldn’t have to worry about questionable material or people being there. In this scenario, everyone wins.
This does not substitute for parental control of the computer. This doesn’t mean that you can send them to their room with the computer and just hope that they aren’t going to wander outside of the sites listed in the favorites folder. With kids it is important to always know where they are online and what they are doing. Favorite sites in a folder is a helpful tool, but it is not the perfect solution to keeping kids away from bad things online.
