• Put yourself out there. The better recognized your company’s name is, the larger your pool of potential customers is going to be. If you only attract a few people, you will have a tiny pool from which to gain insight, and an even tinier pool for when it is time to close some sales.
• Build a brand. Building a brand is different from just getting your name out. You could easily just build a site, optimize it, and put your company’s name all over it. The bad news is that would tell the public nothing about what your company does, or in what particular style. Consider Starbucks versus Dunkin’ Donuts. Both shops sell coffee and treats. Starbucks can charge a lot more because they advertise themselves as a premium establishment, which gives people with disposable income the justification to spend more. Give your customers the same kind of justification.
• Learn what they want. The Internet is the best place to create and promote a customer satisfaction survey. The people know what they want, and they know that you can give it to them. So ask them how you can provide it more effectively for them.
• Continue delivering. Don’t spam anybody, but always stay close at hand. Your next sale is rarely much further away than your closest satisfied customer is.

But now the classroom has been digitized. You can get a Master’s degree in library science without ever leaving the house. Or you can just enrich yourself with whatever class seems interesting to you.

With an online class you can do the assignments and peruse the weekly learning material at your leisure. Maybe you don’t have time to be in a classroom at a specific time, but you can find an hour or two during the week to go over the online materials. Power Point Presentations. You’ve heard of it; what you may not have heard goes beyond using an outline on screen to cover your main points. Handouts. Don’t just construct a boring handout that no one is really going to look at, make up a handout with blanks in strategic places. As you present, those listening must fill in the words. Give an incentive for those who get it right.

Blindfolds. Have the participants wear a blindfold for a short part of your presentation. This is a good way to test their listening skills.

Get animated! Use arm and hand gestures 3 times greater than you think is normal. You will get their attention and keep their interest.

Teach visually. Instead of outlining your presentation via PowerPoint, chalkboard or some other means, draw pictures to capture your intent. Many people learn better visually and retain what is being said through pictures.

Color! Pass out coloring books and outline your presentation around the pictures. It is amazing what we can create when we think outside of the box.

Perhaps we’re just overwhelmed with it all. We’re not really sure how or when to use technology, when and where computers are the most handy and when they should be pushed aside. We want to connect, to lead with motivation, but don’t know where to start.

• Start with a positive attitude and some online research. If you’re going to share a change that you’d like made, make sure you’ve done the research first. Will the change typically work for a group of your size? Age? Demographics? Keep your attitude positive as you share.
• Delegate. Probably one of the most difficult things to do, especially when considering leadership in the home or church where no one (especially you) works with pay. Delegate and follow up. Show that you don’t have to do everything yourself, but let the other person know that you still expect him or her to do the job.
• Be concerned. If someone is legitimately sick and can’t come in, don’t hem and haw about it. Find another way to get the job done until the person can return.
• Speak kindly about everyone. Focus on their positive traits, and you will be surprised how their negative traits minimize.
• If you have to speak to someone about a problem, speak to them alone, and not within a group setting.
• Use technology but don’t use it at the expense of a face-to-face experience. If you have to e-mail or call, do it. This saves you time as well as energy, but make it a point to see the person and speak to them one-on-one as often as you can.

By taking the above steps, you will find your leadership skills improving daily.

The Internet. We love it, we hate it; we get frustrated when we wonder if the information we are reading is legit. We want to find the best blogs, the best research for our project, the most current information out there. But there is so much to sift through and so little time. These ideas will help:

Instead of randomly searching in Google, search Google News for the most up-to-date news regarding politics, economics and daily life.
For the best blogs, check the PR rating located on your toolbar. The PageRank is a rectangular, gray shape with a green line inside. When you bring your mouse across it, the importance and popularity of the blog from 0-10 will be displayed. If you see the words, not ranked, that simply means the site hasn’t been checked yet. This tool can also be used to discover the rating of web pages and their usefulness to the topic you placed in the search bar. If you don’t have PageRank on your desktop, you can get it at Google toolbar PageRank.
Talk with others before beginning your project. Find out what sites they use to discover the most current and correct information regarding your specific topic.
Find out who is writing the blog or web page. Check their credentials.
Read a bit before assuming that what you have is legitimate. Don’t use anything with typos or poor sentence construction.
Triple check with other sites. I know this takes time, but make sure what you have isn’t just something coming from the top of someone’s head.
Check your encyclopedia or dictionary to make sure the facts are correct.

In the end it’s about having the most current and most correct information out there, written up in a way that others can use and glean. Get the best information you need for your next project by facilitating the ideas mentioned above.

• Focus your blog. Perhaps your interest is in interior decorating. Can you decorate on a budget? Do you buy all of your furniture at garage sales or antique dealers?

• Share some of your personal life. Readers like to connect with others. It makes them feel as if they’re not the only one in society with the same concern, love, or problem.
• If you have to write about something negative or difficult to digest, do it was tact. Ranting rarely works unless you are especially good at it.
• Write at least once a week. Folks like to see you posting often and will follow you wherever you take them if you keep your articles fresh and constant.

Above all, keep the lines of communication open. Often, speaking about a concern you’ve noticed while driving in the car, after you’re teen’s date night, or following a movie where a particular subject was presented that raised some concerns for you or your teen, is a good time to broach the subject.

Teach your teens that there are ways to keep safe and that there are sites that are worthwhile and informational. We shouldn’t be afraid to use the Internet; rather we should put on our cautious glasses every time we sit behind our computer and type something into the search box.

Here are just a few places to check.

• Blogs. Blogs are written by individuals who want to share what they know. Bloggers love to add pictures, music and even video to their blog. And they love it when you ask questions.
• Websites. Like blogs, websites have information about the skill you’d like to learn. Less open to conversation and new ideas, websites rather give you the basic information on the skill of your choice and allow you to run with your newfound information in the direction you choose.
• Forums are posted messages on a particular subject. The messages are temporarily archived. Not every comment is posted if the moderator doesn’t approve of it.
• Chat rooms are fun, but not always so easy to control. If your subject is learning how to write with skill, you may find that a writer’s chat room offers you more chatter than the actual subject of interest.
• E-mail. E-mails are a great way to communicate when you don’t have hours to spend on the telephone and just want to know some answers to a couple of things. Get the answers quickly through someone you have met.
• Facebook. A great place to gather; Facebook is also a great place to share what you love. Do some searching to discover who is out there with the same interests as you. Get together online. Teach each other.

Make sure that other sites you come across are written by a professional. Most sites include information on the author. If the author is a professor in the field, or has just graduated in the field in which you have a question, there’s a good chance the information on the site is true and correct. You may also want to check for a listing of books or other resources listed on the site.
Don’t plagiarize. If the temptation is there, read for a day, and then begin your paper on another. This gives your brain some time to think about what you’ve read and express what you know in your own words.

Believe it or not, a very large number of people who are in committed relationships also have very intimate friends of the opposite sex online. I know I might not be the typical gamer but gaming allows me some mindless fun time without leaving the house, which can save so much in commuter time. Do you honestly think that your child would use harmful information for the detriment of their own life or the lives of other people? If you think this, something is seriously wrong. If you have not imbued your offspring with certain values about how they need to live a productive life in a society, the Internet is not the real issue here.

So, what does this really mean to the owner of a web site? Well, for one thing, it means that the aggressive advertising copy that appeals to men is going to fall flat most of the time, when it comes to impressing (and motivating a sale out of) women who might be patronizing the site. Women take on jobs that range from web programming to coming up with the science behind how computers are made. With so many options in the internet, computer, and technology fields, it would just be silly to assume that women don’t participate.

Though there are currently quite a few women working with computers and technology, there still are not nearly as many women as men. Even though the stereotypes and incorrect thinking are starting to change does not mean that they have completely. Some women that would like to work in these fields still feel that it is a male dominated environment, and that they will not be treated with the respect that they deserve, as knowledgeable and capable employees in their field. Unfortunately, this tends to put some women off of the subject. On the other hand, there are women that don’t care how it is seen, they want to do what they love. With the wave of innovation hitting the center of home entertainment, a lot of big companies are coming out with what they call the future of television. If you have ever had to deal with traffic, which almost everyone has, you probably have an opinion about drivers using cell phones in the car. On one hand, you might get angry every time you see someone using a cell phone in the driver’s seat. For some people, this is the biggest offense of all. The memristor is a giant leap forward from the computers that we have now, technology wise. It is not such a giant leap in terms of the time we can expect before seeing them. A memristor has the ability to store information based upon the current that is sent through it. They are also far less bulky than the hardware we currently use, and can store far more information. The science behind the memristor is fascinating, however most people usually just want to know “How will it affect me?” Well, first, the memristor is expected to go on the market as a replacement for flash drives by 2012. They are smaller and hold more information than flash drives. Next, hard disks and DRAM will probably be replaced by 2016, allowing for much greater processing speeds and storage capabilities; however, it can be expected that memristor-based analogue computers are still many years in the future, probably upwards of 20 years. But, once memristor-based analogue computers are marketed, they can be made small enough to fit in a coat pocket and work faster than home computers do now. That is just part of the magic of technology.

Several companies are putting lots of money into researching a technology that would basically allow one to be their own remote control. The idea is that a camera, similar to a webcam, will be hooked up to your television that recognizes certain gestures that you make. For example, if you hold your arm out in front of you, it might recognize this as you wanting to move a cursor on your screen to make a selection on a DVD title screen. Or, if you hold out your open hand in a “stop” gesture, it will stop your movie. This could at least abolish the famous problem of losing the remote (usually in the seat cushions).

This technology might seem rather far-off in the distant future, but it might not actually such a science fiction idea so much as a real option in the near future. In fact, Toshiba has at least one product already on the market that uses this technology, but on computers instead of television; however, many people complain that the product is not as smooth or accurate as they would hope, so there is still some work that needs to be done before everyone starts throwing away all of their remote controls.

For the past few years a couple of companies have been working on ways to “harvest” electricity without the use of wires. To the surprise of many people, they have actually been turning up a substantial amount of success. A demonstration a few years ago by a Fulton Innovation team used a technology called eCoupling demonstrated this success. By using electromagnetic principles, the team was able to transfer electricity without wires. Also, according to the team, it is completely safe and can be used on almost any surface. In their demonstration, the team set a frying pan on a counter in a kitchen with no plug ins and the frying pan started to heat up. The team then set a cell phone on the same counter and the cell phone charged itself. Currently, a company called Powermat is the only one that offers this sort of technology on the market, though it is rather expensive at the moment.

Another technology which is not on the market yet is call Airnergy. Airnergy, being pioneered by Audiovox Accessory Corporation, would theoretically be able to use Wi-Fi hot spots to charge devices such as cell phones. In one demonstration, a Blackberry phone was charged from 30% to 100% power in 90 minutes. Not too bad for not needing a wire. Audiovox Accessory Corporation is hoping to be able to launch the product in a size that could replace the batteries of smartphones sometime in 2011.

Internet shopping, especially for clothing, exploded into activity in the last decade. The shopping list has grown, however, so that anything you want you can find online. Search technology like Google and Yahoo now offer even easier online shopping and information for women. Instead of looking up each individual store for a certain item, women can now enter the item they are looking for into a search engine and allow the search technology to scour all the different websites for the products that match the search terms. Once you have the results, you can further narrow them by choosing a price window, a certain brand, or a certain store.

While this technology does not provide an exhaustive list, it can be a good place to begin your search. It can help you locate a specific item, or it can give you a number of ideas on what you are looking for. With the overload of online clothing stores, you can find dresses, pants, and shoes at many reliable stores on the internet. You can also locate anything from a new washing machine to a wedding dress.

The internet is also now one of the most common venues for purchasing books. Websites that offer buying and selling, such as Amazon.com and Half.com have made it extremely easy to sell books, and the new variety and accessibility has made books more affordable than ever. Amazon even offers reading guides and book club book recommendations. With these tools, many women have formed their own book club discussion groups.

Antiques are also becoming one of the best things to find online. Craigslist and Ebay both offer great places to find old treasures, large or small. Whether you are looking for a dress from the 1950’s to wear to a costume party, or whether you hope to find a collection of old books for your office shelves, even those who are not technology-savvy can find what they are looking for on the internet. Don’t be afraid to explore the world and technology of searching and shopping. You may be amazed at what you can find.

Before the debut of Etsy.com, most of the items for sale on the site could only be bought (and therefore sold) at craft shows or flea markets. What Etsy has done is create a worldwide marketplace that makes the creativity and talent of a woman’s handicraft available to anyone who cares to look.

Etsy also allows a woman to be just as risky or reserved as she wants to be. One woman in Chicago is selling unique, vintage-style aprons every now and then, mostly as an side job as she focuses on raising her two children. Etsy is not a risky or a high-maintenance job for her. In contrast, other Etsy women are now able to base their living solely off of their Etsy earnings. Location makes no different for Etsy sellers, either. Part of the beauty of Etsy’s internet-based system is that women in rural areas, who could never manage to take their products to larger cities such as Chicago or New York, can still sell their products to city buyers. In most cases, this will allow them to receive earnings for a craft that would otherwise be obsolete in their area.

A passion for creating is now much more viable due to increased publicity, as well as increased convenience and affordability. Hoping for a profit from their craft used to involve packing up for a weekend flea market maybe hundreds of miles away, incurring gas, food, and hotel expenses. These women have the freedom to be both an actress and a mom. However, other women are aiming at this phenomena as well. Many women wish to have jobs that end by mid afternoon so that they can be home for their kids after school. Jobs like these are becoming less likely to find in a hard job market, but another field has become available.

Homesourcing is a new type of work that allows women to take costumer service jobs and other communication-oriented jobs home with them. Through new bursts in technology, large companies can have their calls directed straight to you, and you no longer have to come into an office to work. Companies have found that “homesourcing” jobs cuts down on overhead costs and actually increases employee morale, as employees are more likely to be cheerful when they can choose the environment they are in.

What is best about these jobs is that they also mean that you can work while you are at home with your kids. While you may still need to hire a babysitter so that you are not distracted in your work, having a job at home still cuts down on driving time and worry over relocation. For many of these jobs, you also have flexible hours and may be able to complete most if not all of your work before your kids come home from school.

Most colleges have an information technology support office, where workers can help other students, faculty, or employees work get their computers and internet running their best. Not only did Laura have a mind for computers and caught on quickly to what she needed to know, she also became the favorite technology support worker at the college. This is because, as a woman, Laura had stronger communication skills and better interpersonal interaction. According to the professors, she was able to communicate clearer with them, explaining computers in laymen’s terms, and clarifying the information. She was always considerate, and was able to put the people she was helping at ease.

Most people who think of technical support tend to think of it as a job for men, but an overwhelming number of women have been involved in the field as well. In fact, women’s strong communication abilities mean that they may be able to help clients better by offering clearer communication, as well as a stronger person-to-person connection. Women can be more attuned to the levels of frustration and emotion that their client is feeling, and may be better at reducing this frustration by talking with the client in a warm yet informative way.

Laura was not majoring in any sort of technology, and had little interest in pursuing a degree in information systems. She went on to complete her degree in social work while working part time in the on-campus Technology Services. However, she easily understood the information needed to complete her job as a technology assistant, and even became a trusted and reliable helper. This goes to prove that technology has stereotyped women, and they can indeed understand and excel in technology.

This still leaves one wondering how to get all the facts on an event and not get so caught up in the different spins and perspectives that different networks have. The internet has provided an excellent solution to this problem. The internet allows one to not only see news articles and news reports from large networks such as Fox, CNN, and MSNBC, but also provides access to many alternative, or underground, news networks (some such networks are listed at http://www.mathaba.net/www/news/ ). With access to so many different news sources, and therefore equally many different perspectives, one can browse several, dozens, or even hundreds of alternative news networks to get different sides of the story on events (although hundreds might be a little unnecessary). One of the best ways to get the facts is to look at several perspectives and try to find the common elements that most of the stories have in common, although it is good to make sure that one looks at diverse networks (left-wing, right-wing, large networks, underground papers, etc.) to make sure that one is not getting several accounts of the same point of view.

In this modern, high-tech, Information Age that we live in, often the most important thing that one can have is an opinion. As the playwright/essayist George Bernard Shaw once said, “We must always think about things, and we must think about things as they are, not as they are said to be.”

Technology has been very helpful in helping to teach children that diversity is a good thing. Websites such as Teaching Tolerance (http://www.tolerance.org) and Religious Tolerance (http://www.religioustolerance.org) can be valuable tools in teaching people young and old the effects of tolerance and intolerance in today’s world. Accepting differences in people is becoming more and more necessary every day. Populations are becoming more diverse and it is a necessity in society to be able to not only accept differences in others, but to be able to work with, speak with, and love the many groups of people in the world. The internet has brought people from opposite sides of the world together, and allows us to interact with people across the globe. A girl in Boston can “tweet” something that can be read in Las Vegas, Mexico, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia. One person in Alabama can become “Facebook Friends” with someone in China and they can call each other on Skype and see and speak to each other at the click of a mouse. This is yet another way that technology is bringing diversity to our doorstep, and it is another reason that we need to learn to accept, respect, and love the diversity around us.

Family Doctor (http://www.familydoctor.org), Your Diagnosis (http://www.yourdiagnosis.com), and eCureMe (http://www.ecureme.com) are only a few of the dozens of sites that are useful in diagnosing and treating one’s own ailments from the comfort of the keyboard. This handy ability to diagnose oneself is one of the many miracles of high technology. With only a few questions on the internet, one can get a short list of possible diagnoses, ways to narrow the list further, and treatment methods. If the problem is serious, the website should suggest you see a doctor anyways, but many times that is not necessary and you can save a trip and a doctor’s bill simply by using the internet.

Using the internet, one might also like to try some of the less conventional methods of curing a problem that are scattered across the internet. Most of these are “home remedies,” so the effectiveness of these will vary, but if you find one that works, it can often be more cost effective or simply more convenient than the “medical cure.” It is cheaper to rub a potato on a wart to make it go away rather than have to buy a special cream, after all. Although, you might end up paying for the cream anyways, after spending a small fortune on potatoes.

The dangers of shopping online are usually avoidable, and otherwise they can usually be reduced. One such danger is releasing credit card information to people online. This is usually only a danger on sites such as Ebay, where individuals are able to sell things without “going through” the website or a business. This issue does not arise on store websites such as Walmart or Target, since your credit card information is not processed by individuals, but by a large company. This is also not an issue on Amazon.com because things sold on Amazon “go through” Amazon so that you will not have to give your information to anyone except for Amazon. On Craigslist, one should be very careful if an offer requires credit card information online. Since it is basically a forum for people to sell their own things and services, usually it is best to stick to cash or checks as payment. Problems on Ebay can also be avoided by simply using a different payment method when possible, such as Paypal.

While groups on Facebook might be numerous, diverse, and helpful, often entire sites dedicated to a group of people can be more useful than social network groups. These sites, often called “communities,” usually consist of a handful of administrators that keep the site running smoothly, and anywhere from 20 to 20,000 or more people with similar interests all blogging, chatting, or helping each other on a single website. These communities exist for people that are trying a similar diet, people that enjoy the same sports, and even for people that like the same types of food. Getting involved in a community can help to break the feeling of being the only person you know that likes a certain television show or book series.

If you already feel like you’re in a “community” of sorts, but just with some friends not on the Internet, you might want to consider creating a website for your own “community.” This can help you meet others with similar interests as you, or just help everyone in this “community” to keep in touch with one another. Several websites exist to help people create their own websites without needing much knowledge of computers, such as http://www.webs.com.

So what should parents do if they want their kids to be able to enjoy the Internet but do not want their kids to go to “untrusted” sites that might contain a virus or might be inappropriate for children? One option is simple: Trust your kids. As the old adage goes, “Trust begets trust.” In other words, if you want your children to be trustworthy, you must give them a chance to be trustworthy by trusting them. You might be surprised by how trustworthy your children are.

There are other options, of course. One other option would be to install a program to your Internet that filters out certain websites deemed inappropriate or dangerous. Individual Internet providers often offer these services when asked. There are also software programs one can get from places other than one’s Internet provider. These programs usually allow one to select what kinds of sites to block, so that customers may decide for themselves what is inappropriate or dangerous for their own family.

One final option is simply to check the history or cookies on your computer occasionally. Simply checking what sites your computer has been to recently can tell you if you have any reason to worry. Of course, this only helps after the problem has come up at least once before, but it could at least be a helpful way to decide whether or not you need to take further measures.

It’s a common sight today. At some point, everyone walks through the mall or the grocery store and sees a child, no more than six years old, with an iPhone or a Black Berry. Immediately the question rushes to one’s head, “Why does a kid in Kindergarten need a $200 phone?” Yet, while no one seems to know why such a young child would need such an expensive phone, or a phone at all for that matter, more and more kids are getting cell phones. So, the question arises: When should kids get cell phones? As with many questions about raising children, the answer is very circumstantial.

The simplest rule for when a child should be given a cell phone is whenever a cell phone is necessary, or when a cell phone would even be helpful. Most five year old children have no need for a cell phone. Most of them would probably lose it within a day if they got a cell phone; however, not all children should have to wait until they are 16 to have a cell phone, either. If you happen to be the parent of a 13 year old Junior High athlete, for example, it might be beneficial for your child to have a cell phone in case he or she needs to call you because practice was canceled. Or, if you live in a city and your child walks home from school, it might also be a good idea for your child to have a cell phone in case of emergencies.

Another question that may come to mind is, “Does my child need texting and internet on their phone?” While internet on the phone can be rather costly, it can be very helpful, though that decision is, once again, the parent’s decision. On the other hand, texting can often be rather affordable if you find a good plan. Some unlimited plans (Unlimited calls and texts) can cost little more than most standard plans.

A website called Recorded Future (http://www.recordedfuture.com) is attempting to use math, science, and technology to predict future events, including economical changes, decisions by public figures, and political issues. One can sign up on the website to receive e-mail alerts either daily or weekly about topics of one’s choice. Two options are currently available. The first is a free membership which gives one basic information from predicted by the website. The second option is a paid membership, currently costing $149 per month. This gives more in depth information and can be very useful for companies and businesses that need lots of information.

The way that Recorded Future predicts the future is complex, as one would expect; however, the basics of it are quite simple. Recorded Future gathers information from thousands of websites, from CNN and FOX to Twitter and Facebook. The information on these websites are then analyzed by Recorded Future to make predictions of the future and even of current events. In this sense, Recorded Future is kind of like Google, if Google could use the information it looks up to make an educated guess at future events. The advantages of Recorded Future are obvious, and it is continually refining its process to be even more accurate.

Internet schooling, sometimes called eSchooling or eClass, has many advantages over the traditional classroom setting, especially for working adults or stay at home parents. The biggest and most obvious advantage is that one may get a degree without having to leave his or her own house. This can cut the time necessary for lessons and the cost of gas. One other advantage is that one can more or less choose his or her own class hours on a day to day basis. In a stay at home parent’s world of Tuesday Night Soccer games and PTA meetings, or a working adult’s world of staying late to finish projects and coming in early to beat the mid-day heat, it is easy to see how flexible hours can make a huge difference in how realistic a degree can seem.

There are a few disadvantages that come with eSchooling. First, students often do not feel as comfortable asking their instructors questions and can sometimes seem like they lack the advantage of seeing a professor regularly. Also, online classes typically cost more in tuition than their classroom equivalents, though depending on the situation, you may end up earning the difference back in gas money.

For starters, when has forbidding something ever kept a child old enough to walk away from the “forbidden fruit” for more than a few minutes? The nature of human beings is to question and seek out that which has been denied to us, because its rarity is seen as being more desirable than the more mundane things which are offered to us constantly. Did you or did you not seek out what your parents tried to forbid you, way back when? And did you or did you not survive the ordeal, having gained some wisdom for your efforts (and occasionally mistakes)?

The fact of the matter is, when it comes to any novel experience, there is no sheltering children. The Internet is the perfect example of this, because any person can go to any site, unless parental controls are engaged (and even they can generally be worked around, whether you would know how to do so or not). The act of trying to limit what your children can learn may even end up doing more harm to them than letting them be.

It is not sexism to say that men are typically perceived as being more into technology than women are. If you look demographically into most high tech fields, men outnumber women by a large factor. There are more male than female engineers, men dominate the skilled building trades, and more systems administrators are male than are female. If this is any indication of the degree to which a gender can be said to embrace technology, there is neither disrespect nor intentional sexism involved in many people’s belief that men want to embrace technology more than women do. This is not true, though. But why would this be the case?

That is probably at least one research study in its own right. Since the old assumptions are completely false, the entire way that our society looks at men and women’s relation to technology is skewed beyond being reasonable. It is possible that women see technology as being more of a tool, while men still tend to just see it as a series of fun little toys that have some enjoyable functions. Perhaps men just tend to be more playful.

For this reason, women are increasingly embracing technology.  It’s not just for their own personal enjoyment and fulfillment, however, but to better manage their other responsibilities. As women become more cemented into the workforce, they are adopting the technology as part of their job. They are dealing with power point, using a blackberry, and becoming more familiar with basic computer coding. A lot of things are being put on their plate.

But technology is also helping with their responsibilities at home. They are learning to comparison shop for pet insurance online as it is easier then calling around. They are ordering groceries through a delivery service as opposed to heading to the store. They are learning to download movies to their home TV since it saves them a trip to the video store and they no longer risk finding out that the movie isn’t in stock. Women are the new face of technology these days, and the people who it benefits the most.

It is always fascinating to talk to a women’s studies major. They advocate a thing they call “feminism,” even though most of them have no operative definition for it. When you ask about their beliefs, they generally only have very vaguely defined notions. But one popular notion among feminists is that the notion of gender needs to be minimized in society, if not eliminated altogether. This would not involve any surgeries, mind you – just the removal of all societal notions of what it means to be a “man” or a “woman.” Perhaps we could all walk around in completely neutral outfits that show completely equal amounts of skin, as if male and female sexual ornamentation worked in exactly the same way. Obviously, the notion that manhood and womanhood are trained into us in a socially constructed way, as opposed to simply being a part of our physical and neurological natures, is a total farce.

This makes it very hard to understand why anybody is surprised that women and men go online in different ways. While both genders go online to find information and entertainment, men tend to go to sites where they can absorb info without trying to build relationships, whereas women tend toward the polar opposite intention. Women tend to seek out information from actual people, and share strategies in an equal sense, instead of trying to build up their personal social status the way men do. Obviously, this speaks to the different ways in which our species has always survived and reproduced itself. But often the most intelligent among us take the longest to figure out the obvious things in life.

Apparently, women are a substantially larger part of the Facebook user base than men are. And while men tend to look at social networking sites as a chance to climb the social ladder and store the contact information of people who may be useful to them later, women tend to go onto such sites wanting to actually communicate with people. From one gender’s perspective, the other tends to seem ridiculous. What do feminists think of that?

When your children go online, they are entering a world where censorship is impossible, and all sorts of different conflicting views dominate. The Internet is a place where any sort of sexual perversions, any sort of weapons related knowledge, and any sort of hate speech is not only accessible, but easily so. To be online is to be able to access the sum of human knowledge. If you are scared of the possibilities you just remembered (because they have always been pretty obvious), you need to think about who your children are.

Are your children going to go out and have sex with people, just because someone does so online? Maybe you should tell them why that isn’t a good idea. Are your children going to build pipe bombs, just because some very good instructions exist (for plastique, black powder and a few other fun recipes) for how to do so? You do realize that if they wanted to, they could find the same information in any major library. Most people can understand that knowledge is out there, and choose not to use it for evil.

Women who are smart shoppers know that the Internet is the way to go. There are all kinds of saving and buying opportunities, and you can get a percentage off your online order, just by using your computer the right way. Other times, you’ll get a set amount off your total purchase at a particular Website. No matter what you use, you’ll have the chance to save big. As women get further into the workforce, they also get more into technology because they use computers a lot more often. That can really help them to save big money online.

As technology advances, there will be more opportunities women can use to save money for their families. You can put that saved money back for a rainy day, or use it to buy something else that you need or want. A penny saved really is a penny earned, and online savings opportunities are a great way to save a lot of pennies off every purchase that you make. As a woman trying to care for her family, you can check back often to make sure that you’re getting the best deals that technology is able to bring you.

A lot of parents feel a false sense of “security” on their children’s behalf, because they make sure that parental controls are set up on their computers. Notwithstanding that a child can save up enough money to buy their own computer, your own computer’s security software can actually be tinkered with. What is interesting is that your attempts to protect your children from some nebulous evil that apparently lurks beyond your list of “safe” sites are merely control gestures born out of insecurity. Who are you really trying to protect; your children, or yourself? If you are just trying to feel safe on their behalf, it is really only a matter of time before they sabotage your efforts, and render your efforts at security completely futile. Of course, that might be your subconscious intention from the get go; if they can overcome your attempts at controlling their online activities, they can overcome other people who might want to oppress them in other avenues of their lives.

While “oppress” might be a harsh way of saying this, what do you really think you are doing when you try to “protect” your children online? Are you trying to inhibit their knowledge of their own sexuality, or of how other people create weapons that hurt still other people? Are you trying to keep your children from talking to people who might tell them things that you do not feel ready for them to know? In the same way that you can not simply walk a few steps behind your children at all times, making sure they never sustain an injury or make a mistake, you can not keep them from going online and finding things you do not think are appropriate.

Even from a technical standpoint, you have surprisingly little control over your children’s online activities. Some web browsers have all sorts of parental controls, designed to give you peace of mind. But what exactly keeps your children from simply downloading a new web browser, and using it for their illicit searches? They could even uninstall your browser, and re-download it without restrictions.

The fact is that women are no longer the appliance people. There was certainly a time in history when a women’s role was that of a  homemaker and their primary job was to keep a clean house and govern children but those days are long gone. The role of a women has now changed. They are out in the workforce and they are filling college classrooms. It is no longer a novelty to have a woman attend college but rather a necessity for that woman.

Big companies have started to gear their products towards women, including when they download software. This can be seen most in the design of these products. It’s been tested over time that women are visual people who do tend to care more about the outward appearance of a product as opposed to a man who in many cases is more or less concerned about the functionality alone. A women would prefer in most cases to have a blend of the two. This is why companies spend big money on what is on the outside as much as the inside. A woman’s touch is everywhere, including in big technology.

Does anybody still remember when a phone was only used for making calls? If you have forgotten what a call is, that is when you dial a number, and talk to a person on the other end by way of using your voice. If you have not done that in awhile, you may want to try it again. Nowadays, the use of social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and the like), coupled with some people’s compulsive need to text, have basically relegated the “phone call” to old hat status. Some people may end up going so long without making a call, one wonders if all of the “free” minutes most wireless companies allow their customers access to are not totally wasted. The use of a human voice is a critical component of connecting with people. But then, so is actually seeing them in person, which is so very 20th century.

Apparently, studies have found that men actually use social networking sites on their phones more than women do. Maybe this is because men tend to use social networking in a more mission based way (the same way men look at everything in life). Or maybe it’s because women would rather not do things in the inherently time pressured way that a phone suggests, preferring to use a computer to do their social network using. Either way, it is a lot more surprising than learning that women text more often. Many psychologists say that women feel more of a need to connect to other people, so perhaps that is surprising.

After all, what kind of a connection does a text message imply? It is less like contacting a human being, and more like making a statement the way an advertiser would. “This is what I’m saying, take it or leave it” would be a common way of interpreting how text messages are typically used in interpersonal communications. It is almost as if it were designed out of the stereotypically masculine mindset of domination over one’s voice, as if we are all just talking at others instead of talking to each other.

Is it just your imagination, or have people actually gotten busier over the years?  Women have always been busy, but now, they ae getting into new technology which makes women even busier. While that’s not a new debate and will probably never end, you only have so much time in your day. And while it would be great to just head off to the casino and take your chances at the poker tables, there are a whole lot of better uses for your time. For one thing, you can go online and try your hand at freelancing. While you might not think that you have any kind of skills that somebody would pay for, you might be surprised at how resourceful you can be… and just how many people might need a little help.

Have you ever gone to an online forum and spent hours pouring over coupons, or trying to figure out how to save a dollar or two here and there? While there is nothing whatsoever wrong with using your money how you want (instead of just wasting it on stuff you don’t really care about), it is just as important to find ways to make some more money, too. Think about it – why worry about trying to save $5, when you can do something interesting that makes you an extra $5? Your time is worth a lot more than that!
